Mark my words: Last night will go down in history as one of the best nights of my life. After much waiting,I FINALLY got to see Andrew McMahon perform...acoustically, at the Bowery Ballroom. Musicians like him that are able to pull that off and do a damn good job of doing so ALWAYS earn my respect. Those are the people who inspire me. Those are the true artists, the ones with real talent, who don't have to hide behind a sea of dancers or flashy lights or big intricate stage setups and harnesses and shit like that. It's the music that counts. Anywho, Andrew is a true artist if I ever saw one.Out of all the concerts I've ever been to in my life, this one felt like it was the most intimate. After a song or two,the lights would come on (something you never get to witness at a typical concert venue) and Andrew would enthrall us with backstories on songs, told jokes, and even threw out fortune cookies and everyone was able to share the contents of their fortune with him as well as sharing his own.His fortune? "Where there's a will, there's a way" ha.strangely ironic. After these long interludes he'd then play a song, solely on piano and sometimes with the help of Bobby the awesome guitarist on acoustic guitar and he'd play the most beautiful acoustic versions of songs we are so used to rocking out to. I still can't believe I was at an Andrew show and didn't stand up once! The major highlight for me though was when he sang "There There Katie" a song he wrote for his sister when he became sick with Leukemia. It's hands down one of my favorite songs of his and it's a song that he only had ever performed live a handful of times. So when I heard him play the opening notes of the song the tears came and I lost it.Andrew is just so inspiring as a musician,an artist,a survivor and a hero...truly... in every sense of the word. It's funny because this event was officially titled "An evening with Andrew McMahon" and that's exactly what it was.so Thank You Andrew,Last night was inspiring.Thank You for sharing your gift of music with us...and for the fortune cookie humor haha maybe one day you will finally relent and play us Konstantine...
